Retail technology company Springboard Retail's donation helps its corporate charity, MitoAction, raise close to $200,000 at Derby Day Event
BOSTON, MA—Springboard Retail employees have reached a total of $40,000 raised for MitoAction—a leading patient advocacy organization within the mitochondrial disease community—last month as a part of the Sandra K. Russell Derby Day Benefit for Mito. The fundraising total represents a 26% increase over 2018’s fundraising efforts.
Selected as Springboard Retail’s corporate charity because of numerous employees’ personal connections to the disease, MitoAction is a nonprofit organization founded by patients, parents, and Boston hospital healthcare leaders who had a vision of improving quality of life for children and adults with mitochondrial disease. Proceeds raised as a part of the annual Sandra K. Russell Derby Day Benefit for Mito support the programs and resources that MitoAction offers free of charge to the worldwide mitochondrial disease community. Programs include sending children to “Mito” summer camp in affiliation with the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by Paul Newman through the Matthew Harty Camper Fund program. In addition, MitoAction offers scholarships, patient education materials, weekly support groups, webinars, live educational events, financial support, care packages for families on extended hospital stays, and much more.
Springboard Retail faced the unique challenge of fundraising for a Massachusetts-based event with more than half of employees living outside the state, and even the county.
“Remote work impacts everything,” said Jen Raines-Loring, VP of People at Springboard Retail. “People want to help with things like corporate charity efforts, but the means of helping should make sense in their daily work lives. Further, for events such as Derby Day, we have to consider ways for the 60% of our team to participate who live outside of Boston. Making this event inclusive, despite the physical aspects, was really key to gaining widespread participation.”
Through additional digital efforts, the sharing of personal stories and experiences, and video learning groups, they reached 72% employee participation.
